A board is graded on both sides, and the worse side determines the final grade. The best grade is called FAS. This stands for Firsts and Seconds. These grades are the best you can get. Firsts required 91 2/3 % clear area and Seconds required 81 2/3 %. FAS, which is both Firsts and Seconds combined, requires 83 1/3 % clear area. Wood, Lumber, & Milling GlossaryAcre - An area of land containing 43,560 square feet or 10 square chains. A square acre would be about 209 feet by 209 feet. A circular acre would have a radius of 117.75 feet. Air dried - Lumber or other wood products that have been either dried by exposure to natural atmospheric conditions outdoors or in an unheated shed or died to equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere.
